Best 3/4 HP garbage disposals for medium-size households

A 3/4 HP garbage disposal is best for a household with 2-4 people. This is the choice for most people as it offers a price-use balance. They come with most features of a higher-powered disposal, like better noise protection, but are cheaper. You can grind most food items like potato peels, eggshells, etc with this one. The 3/4 HP delivers enough power to smoothly process the food wastes without getting jammed.

Evolution Compact is one of the most sold compact garbage disposals by InSinkErator. It is small in size compared to there garbage disposals in this power rating with just 12.25 inches of height. It uses a DuraDrive induction motor that runs at 1725 RPM. It uses a 2-stage grinding system that can grind food waste to smaller sizes than a normal garbage disposal does.

Evolution Compact features a noise insulation technology called SoundShield which makes it 30% quieter than normal garbage disposals. It is made of durable Stainless steel grinding components and a corrosion-resistant grinding chamber. It uses a 3-bolt assembly for installation which also reduces vibrations to some extent.

If you are looking for a quiet and compact 3/4 HP garbage disposal with a long warranty Evolution Compact is highly recommended.

Evolution Pro750 is a slightly better garbage disposal than Evolution Compact in terms of features and warranty. In addition to silent operation, it also comes with AutoReverse, and JamSensor; two technologies to help reduce jams. In all other aspects, it is very similar to its older model above. It is powered by a DuraDrive induction motor that runs at 1725 RPM. It uses a 2-stage grinding system.

This is a continuous feed type of garbage disposal that comes with a 3-bolt assembly for easy mounting. It is also compact in size with dimensions of 12.25″ height and 8.75 inches width. Its build quality is exactly the same as for Evolution Compact.

In short, Evolution Pro750 is a slightly better version of the Evolution Compact but their pricing is very similar. So I definitely recommend this garbage disposal over the other.

This is a premium garbage disposal just like the above two. It comes with premium features like SoundShield technology which reduces noise by 30%. It also uses a 2-stage Multi-Grinding technology to grind food waste much faster and easier.

Evolution Cover Control Plus comes with a 7-year warranty. Since this is a batch feed type garbage disposal it needs to be closed before it runs, this ensures more safety and prevents any unwanted objects from falling into the unit while it is running.

This is the only low-cost garbage disposal by InSinkErator in this list. It doesn’t come with any premium features like noise insulation but it is more popular and has more sales than some of the premium models above.

It is powered by a 3/4 HP DuraDrive induction motor that has a speed of 1725 RPM (this is exactly the same motor in all other garbage disposals mentioned above). This is a continuous feed type disposal where food wastes can be disposed of continuously.

Badger 5XP is covered under warranty for only 4 years which is less than all other garbage disposals within this category. Its grinding components are made of galvanized steel which is not as good as stainless steel.

If you are looking for a low cost but powerful garbage disposal, Badger 5XP is a good choice.

Waste King is a very reputed brand in this industry with strong competition from InSinkErator. Their products are in no way inferior, the only reason I listed them below the InSinkErator models is for my convenience.

Waste King 9950 is a popular garbage disposal by Waste King in the 3-bolt mount category. Most other Waste King models use an EZ Mount assembly. It is built with stainless steel grinding components and a corrosion-resistant, high-quality plastic grinding chamber.

This unit is powered by a 3/4 HP high-speed permanent magnet motor that runs at a speed of 2700 RPM. It is pocket friendly, powerful, and comes with a 10-year warranty.

  • Motor: 3/4 HP, 2700 RPM permanent magnet motor
  • Feed type: Continuous
  • Warranty: 8-years
  • Mount: 3-bolt

Waste King 9940 looks similar to the above-discussed model 9950. However their dimensions are slightly different, this model is smaller with dimensions of 13.5″ x 8″. Just like the 9950, this garbage disposal unit has stainless steel grinding components and a corrosion-resistant polymer grinding chamber. It doesn’t have any premium features like InSinkErator models, this one is more of a ‘get it done’ product.

Waste King 9940 uses a 3-bolt assembly for mounting. However, please note that Waste King’s 3-bolt assembly is not compatible with that of InSinkErator. It uses the same 3/4 HP permanent magnet motor as the 9950, so their performances are the same.

This unit is covered under a limited warranty of 8 years.

The grinding motor it uses is the same as that of the above two Waste King models. The size of this unit is 14.5″ x 8.5″. Its build quality is also the same as that of 9940 and 9950. Unlike premium InSinkErator models Waste King garbage disposals have only one grinding stage but the high speed of the motor helps to effortlessly grind the food waste.

Waste King 3300 is covered under a limited warranty of 10 years.

It comes with a drain stopper which is used to activate the unit. The grinding components of the unit are made of stainless steel to make them durable against rust and corrosion. Things to consider while buying a 3/4 HP garbage disposal

EZ or 3-bolt mount

Garbage disposals come with two types of mounting assemblies; EZ and 3-bolt. EZ mounts are made of high-quality plastic and are a bit easier to install. Most Waste King garbage disposals use this mounting assembly.

The 3-bolt assembly, on the other hand, is made of Stainless Steel. It is a bit more difficult to install than the EZ mount. However, its fit is tighter and thus reduces vibrations to some extent.

There aren’t many practical differences between these two mounting assemblies, so choosing any of these is more of a personal preference.

Removable splash guard

Some of the above garbage disposals have a removable splash guard. A splash guard is that rubber thing that sits at the entrance of the garbage disposal. It prevents splashing out of food waste from the garbage disposal when it is running. It also prevents, to some extent, unwanted objects from accidentally falling into the disposal unit.

Over time these splash guards accumulate food wastes underneath them which will rot and smell. A removable splash guard is easy to clean. All Waste King garbage disposals in the above list come with such splash guards. But for all InSinkErator models listed above the splash guards are fixed, and are harder to clean.

If you prefer easy cleaning I recommend going for a Waste King.

Hex hole for unjamming

All InSinkErator garbage disposals come with a hex hole on their bottom side. This hex hole is directly connected to the motor. If the disposal jams, you can easily unjam it by rotating the motor to and fro by inserting an Allen key into this hex hole.

For the Waste King garbage disposals above, this is not possible. In their case, you will have to unjam them from the top using a garbage disposal wrench, or by using a broom handle.

So I recommend going for an InSinkErator in this case.

Noise

Garbage disposals make a lot of noise when grinding. They are often as noisy as a lawn mover. However, there are quiet options as well. If you want a quiet garbage disposal, choose one from the InSinkErator Evolution models. They come with ShoundSheld technology that reduces noise by 30 to 40%.

Waste King garbage disposals too come with some levels of insulation but they are not as quiet as the ones in the Evolution series.
